Assignment / Overview - Project 2: Bibliographic Description and Analysis of a Periodical

Web page due Wednesday July 16 by 8pm
In-class discussion on Thursday July 17

In this project you will branch out from our close reading of The New Age. In the small groups that you signed up for in class, you will provide a general bibliographic description and analysis of the periodical your group has chosen. Your group will write up the assignment as a page on the course website, followed by a full day of discussion.

Webpage: Your writeup should be the equivalent of an organized and insightful 4-5 page paper that gives a general feel for the periodical you’ve chosen from the Modernist Journals Project. Place the page under the <Descriptive Bibliographies> menu heading. Here are some items to address in your writeup.

  • Who were the editors and at what times?
  • Where was it printed, and by which firm?
  • What were the size, geographic locations, and social-economic-political positions of its readership?
  • Which libraries, archives, or museums house original or reproduction copies of this magazine? Worldcat at the Brooklyn College Library is a good starting place. If you have trouble logging in, just go to http://worldcat.org and be sure to enter your ZIP code if it doesn't show local library results. It's also worth searching local libraries like CUNY schools, NYPL, NYU, Columbia, Fordham, etc.
  • Which dates/issues/pages did you examine?
  • Describe the politics and/or aesthetics of its content, making a brief analysis of its editorial policies, arrangement or typographical practices, and any other aspects you deem appropriate. What values does it ascribe to the literary? Please provide a handful of representative examples or quotes.

Much information might be found in the MJP’s introduction to the journal you’re studying, in the Essays section, and in the Biographies area. Those interested in further research can check out the Books and Periodicals Database. You might not be able to answer all of the above, but do the best you can. As with the New Age assignment, if there are any particularly interesting visuals or page arrangements, it would be great if you would include images of them in your writeup (contact me if you need help with that), or alternatively link to the pages containing them.
