Wassily Kandinsky

For my final project I would like to research the life and work of Wassily Kandinsky, who was a Russian born (like me) artist, and one of the most influential 20th century artists. I myself do abstract art and therefore am quite interested to see how it was perceived in the early 1900’s. Kandinsky is actually credited as one of the first to do modernist abstract paintings. As Robert Scholes states “Now considered to be one of the founders of abstract art”.

In my research I intend to write about his life (bibliography), heavily focusing on and analyzing a variety of his works, including the contributions he has made to the modernist movement, as well as researching how he and his work have evolved throughout the years. I will also attempt to understand how Kandinsky and his work were received by the periodicals we have been reviewing in class from the Modern Journal Project. After doing a quick search on MJP I have noticed that Kandinsky was featured in a few of the periodicals like Blast, Rhythm and The New Age.  Not to mention that he has been mentioned in numerous essays and quite a few books, one of which being Paradoxy of Modernism by Robert Scholes. There are also endless books about him or which include his artwork and to my surprise a few books by Wassily Kandinsky himself called Concerning the Spiritual in Art ,which I was able to locate from Project Gutenberg in a free e-book download (http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/5321).
